The Nambe/Pojoaque Valley has irrigated lands with traditional Acequias since the early 1700's. The Nambe Dam and Reservoir was commissioned in 1975 as part of the San Juan Chama Project to deliver stored water to the river system and Acequias for irrigation purposes. PVID is operated by a volunteer board and paid staff which manages the storage and release of water in the reservoir in concert the the Bureau of Reclamation and the Nambe, Pojoaque and San Ildefonso Pueblos.
